Building work starts on new specialist hospital facility for Birmingham

Construction work has commenced on a new £100m specialist hospital facility in Birmingham, which will provide high quality acute care to private patients in the region as well as extra capacity and access to specialist facilities for NHS patients.

Prime is developing the facility on behalf of a joint venture between HCA Healthcare UK (HCA UK) and University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust Foundation Trust (UHB). Located on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham campus, the 14,728sqm facility is being built by VINCI Construction UK and funded by M&G Investments (M&G).

The new hospital is expected to take three years to build and will deliver space for 138 beds, including 72 new NHS beds, consultation, treatment and diagnostics accommodation, a new radiotherapy unit and 4 state-of-the-art operating theatres, including 1 hybrid theatre.

Prime secured planning permission for the 8-storey building in April 2018 and achieved financial close in February 2019. By carefully managing market tests for the selection and appointment of the funder, M&G, and principal contractor, VINCI, Prime has been able to deliver the project below the pre-agreed affordability cap, creating tangible added-value for HCA UK and UHB.
